I urge my fellow Gbagyi natives, who are the highest yam farmers in Nigeria, to organize themselves into very strong businesses and cooperatives to tap into the federal government’s re-organization of the yam production and export business in the country so as to earn hard currencies for ourselves.
No one knows the yam crop or species better than our people. With a popular yam variant called Gwari or paper which many Nigerians and foreigners like eating, we are set to earn more. Also, get improved seedlings.
With over six million natives spread across five states of Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara and FCT-Abuja, no one knows the yam crop or species better than our people.
If you don’t have a company, I charge you to establish one or belong to a cooperative. Go to the Agriculture ministry in Abuja and get the details of the export programme. You can also explore major markets in Nigeria too such as Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt. But if it pays more to export, focus more on that business.
We should not allow middlemen to benefit from our sweat. Be the farmer and exporter yourself if you are to earn a major income.
